The Limitless Possibilities
black + white

In 1967 the Academy Awards disbanded the two pronged cinematography category awarding one winner for black and white flicks, and another for color. Despite the readily available technology to make movies in color, a few lone wolfs (think: Jim Jarmusch, Kevin Smith, Woody Allen) stuck with a b&w palate. Ya know, because they’re artsy. Check out a selection of these decidedly two tone films at MFA this month.

Taste of Somerville
because food

So if you plan on eating tonight, this is place to do it. With beer from Slumbrew, Harpoon, and Goose Island, and savory fare from Bergamot, Boston Burger, and Redbones, and sweet treats from Taza and JP Licks, any other option is a far second. And that’s just the small list. Over 50 local eateries are gathering for event. Think of it as an affordable 50+ course meal. You’re welcome.

Gay Pride Launch Party
cakes da killa

Oberon has invited Cakes Da Killa, an up-and-coming LGBT rapper, to strut his stuff on stage and then cat walk off to kick off Boston Pride Week. He’ll be waving the LGBT Pride Flag at City Hall and celebrating in style. Look out Beyoncé, there may be a new queen.

The Abductees
paranormal photogs

Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, and the arrival of the Space Age fueled the utter disbelief and ridicule towards the Hills, an interracial couple who claim to have been abducted in the 1960s. SMFA alum Cassandra Klos tells the story of the two outcasts in her photography exhibition. You don’t have to be a believer, or on board the scientology ship with Tom Cruise, or like the X-files to enjoy the show. But it doesn’t hurt.

David Sedaris
no one wit wonder

David Sedaris is making his way back to the Harvard bookstore for a reading and signing of his latest, Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls. Before you throw out your soda, note: he will not actually be discussing diabetes and its causes with owls. But to avoid being a punch line for the snarky essayist, whose smart and sharp wit has gotten him on all the best sellers lists, we suggest you reach only for water.

Sharon Van Etten
tissue tour

Sharon Van Etten’s bare-all music gets even the toughest dudes to tear up with songs about heartbreak, abuse, and inner struggles. Don’t expect her show to sound like Bummerfest 2014, though. Live, the NJ gal is nothing but endearing asides and dweeby jokes that dry our tears and convince us everything will be okay after all.
